A Few Favorites I have been working hard this year to clean out the clutter that collects in life on all levels. Inwardly, working to maintain a positive outlook and thought process putting all of my intention on my goals and where I want to be. On the physical level, well let's just say I have some more hospice runs to make donating clothing we do not wear or Baby T's clothes he no longer fits. It seems only right to continue this through my many many images. Here are just a few that I have stumbled upon thus far!

Summer Mini Sessions 2015Book today for a session 5/2-5/31

Why book a mini?

Portrait mini sessions are a great idea for the parent who loves to get pictures taken several times a year rather than just once or twice. The shorter session time and smaller image count allow me to make the mini sessions more affordable than the regular portrait session.

How long until I received my images?

My goal is to have all of your mini portrait session images posted to a private online gallery within 7 business days. You’ll then select the images that you would like to have and then I will take your selected images and create your personal disc.

After you book:

Within one week of booking your mini session you will will receive a welcome email with everything you need to know to get ready for your session including:

  • Directions to our session location
  • How to prepare for your session
  • A Portrait Agreement for you to fill out and return
  • A questionnaire for you to fill out and return so that we are able to get to know your family a little better!

Contact Rebecca at 916.224.0194 or today to book your session!

30 Life Lessons From My Two Rockstar Grandmas An email I received from my grandpa: (he has the greatest ones...)

  1. Never let other people define you.
  2. Marry your best friend.
  3. You should do what you love in life, even if it doesn't pay top dollar.
  4. Enjoy your youth because it flies by incredibly fast.
  5. Be yourself and be honest. Not everyone is going to like you, but that's just what happens and as you grow older, you become less and less concerned with the opinions of your critics.
  6. You can't love other people before you love yourself.
  7. Travel whenever possible.
  8. Take advantage of the changes that are happening around you. A lot of them truly are bettering the world we live in. We have seen so many changes in our lifetimes, even in just the way we have been treated as women. Dive into social change and allow it to empower you in life.
  9. Take care of your body and be mindful of your health.
  10. Don't try to change anyone else. You can't. You can only change yourself.
  11. You learn a lot from your mistakes. I know everyone says that, but you never truly understand it until you've made some massive mistakes. And you will, but you'll grow from them.
  12. You can never have too many close friends.
  13. Don't walk away too soon from your marriage or relationships. They take work and it's worth fighting for. Trust us.
  14. Money can't make you happy, but it sure as hell helps. So work hard to sustain yourself financially and build a solid foundation with your work.
  15. That being said, your career isn't the most important thing in your life. People are. No matter how successful you become you must not forget that.
  16. Wine is an old friend and a faithful one at that. Remember that you're never too old or too busy to have fun.
  17. Don't compromise your beliefs or your morals for anyone else.
  18. It's really important to give back to the community that gave to you. Love where you live and live where you love.
  19. If you're looking for easy, don't get married. It's not always easy, but it's incredibly rewarding.
  20. Wait until you are a little older to get married. In our generation, everyone married young and there is a meaningful lesson to learn from that. Young people are changing too much to commit solely to each other.
  21. At the end of your life, all the material crap that you collect won't be there. It's the people that you loved and loved you that will remain. So don't heavily concern yourself with materialistic happiness.
  22. Share with others whenever you can.
  23. Walk away from negative people and situations. It isn't always easy, but if you don't separate yourself from evil, you will allow it to consume you.
  24. Once you have a family, they become your number one responsibility and priority for just about the rest of your life. It's a beautiful thing, but make sure you're ready for it when you decide to start one.
  25. As a parent, you shouldn't worry as much about the dishes being washed or the floor being clean. Play games with your kids and enjoy the little moments. Life's daily messes will be irrelevant in the end.
  26. Parenting is a cycle. When you start out, parents take care of the children and then the children end up taking care of the parents. So appreciate each other, we are here to take care of one another.
  27. Beauty starts within. A person with a beautiful heart does not need to be "pretty" on the outside to be an extraordinary person. Physical beauty is overrated.
  28. Live your life with as few enemies as possible. Let go of grudges because they won't matter in the end anyway and forgiveness is freeing.
  29. Never let an old person into your body. You're only as old as you feel.
  30. No one and no amount of money will make you feel comfortable in life; you have to be comfortable within yourself. If you aren't, the world becomes a scary place. We used to think that we needed people to be happy. We then learned in our many years that all you need to be happy is yourself. You are your own hero in this life and that's something to be proud of.

Be Happy! Be Confident!

Shoot Flics.

The Ten Legal Commandments of Photography

I. Anyone in a public place can take pictures of anything they want. Public places include parks, sidewalks, malls, etc. Malls? Yeah. Even though it’s technically private property, being open to the public makes it public space.

II. If you are on public property, you can take pictures of private property. If a building, for example, is visible from the sidewalk, it’s fair game.

III. If you are on private property and are asked not to take pictures, you are obligated to honor that request. This includes posted signs.

IV. Sensitive government buildings (military bases, nuclear facilities) can prohibit photography if it is deemed a threat to national security.

V. People can be photographed if they are in public (without their consent) unless they have secluded themselves and can expect a reasonable degree of privacy. Kids swimming in a fountain? Okay. Somebody entering their PIN at the ATM? Not okay.

VI. The following can almost always be photographed from public places, despite popular opinion:

  • accident & fire scenes, criminal activities
  • bridges & other infrastructure, transportation facilities (i.e. airports)
  • industrial facilities, Superfund sites
  • public utilities, residential & commercial buildings
  • children, celebrities, law enforcement officers
  • UFOs, the Loch Ness Monster, Chuck Norris

VII. Although “security” is often given as the reason somebody doesn’t want you to take photos, it’s rarely valid. Taking a photo of a publicly visible subject does not constitute terrorism, nor does it infringe on a company’s trade secrets.

VIII. If you are challenged, you do not have to explain why you are taking pictures, nor to you have to disclose your identity (except in some cases when questioned by a law enforcement officer.)

IX. Private parties have very limited rights to detain you against your will, and can be subject to legal action if they harass you.

X. If someone tries to confiscate your camera and/or film, you don’t have to give it to them. If they take it by force or threaten you, they can be liable for things like theft and coercion. Even law enforcement officers need a court order.

My New Love - Coconut Oil I am so in love with Coconut Oil! This year in California the weather has thrown off so so many things. Be it weather that is affecting insects/bug or the dry air affecting my skin! After reading and researching the uses and benefits of coconut oil I am sold. I am so very excited to keep track of my journey in using this fabulous "cure-all"!

Some of the health benefits include hair & skin care, stress relief (and who can't use some of that?!), weight loss and management. You can even see a boost in your immune system, relief from kidney problems, heart diseases and high blood pressure! There are so many more benefits with the use of coconut oil I cannot wait!

Organic FactsHealth Benefits of Coconut Oil

More uses....(excerpt from Organic Facts)

Coconut oil is strongly recommended for a number of other benefits that are explained below. Using coconut oils has been shown to mildly help the following:

Liver: The presence of medium chain triglycerides and fatty acids helps in preventing liver diseases because those substances are easily converted into energy when they reach the liver, thus reducing the work load of the liver and also preventing accumulation of fat.

Kidney: Coconut oil helps in preventing kidney and gall bladder diseases. It also helps to dissolve kidney stones.

Pancreatitis: Coconut oil is also believed to be useful in treating pancreatitis.

Stress relief: Coconut oil is very soothing and hence it helps in removing stress. Applying coconut oil to the head, followed by a gentle massage, helps to eliminate mental fatigue.

Diabetes: Coconut oil helps in controlling blood sugar, and improves the secretion of insulin. It also promotes the effective utilization of blood glucose, thereby preventing and treating diabetes.

Bones: As mentioned earlier, coconut oil improves the ability of our body to absorb important minerals. These include calcium and magnesium which are necessary for the development of bones. Thus, coconut oil is very useful to women who are prone to osteoporosis after middle age.

Dental care: Calcium is an important component of our teeth. Since coconut oil facilitates absorption of calcium by the body, it helps in developing strong teeth. Coconut oil also stops tooth decay.

HIV and cancer: It is believed that coconut oil plays an instrumental role in reducing a person’s viral susceptibility for HIV and cancer patients. Preliminary research has shown an indication of this effect of coconut oil on reducing the viral load of HIV patients (Reference).

Tara Elizabeth, Contest Winner!

Facebook Contest Winner

Tara Elizabeth Photography

Q. Tell us a bit about yourself.
A. I am 34 years old and while I have had a life-long interest in art photography, it is only in the last 4-5 years that I have had much of a chance to hone my craft. I am fortunate that with the digital age I now have the resources to do so. It cost me my whole allowance as a kid to get a roll of film for my first 110 speed camera developed and if a shot didn't come out right, it was a wasted exposure. When I finally got my hands on a digital camera I could take as many shots as I needed or wanted. That freedom to just keep shooting has allowed me to take chances and experiment. I shoot with a simple point and shoot. First a Samsung S630 and for the last couple of years a Canon Powershot A1200. It's not high-tech. It's not "pro-grade," but I am not trying to be a "professional photographer" in that sense. I am much more interested in the art than the commerce side of photography, although I am proud to have sold a few of my prints over the last couple of years. I would LOVE to eventually be able to upgrade to a DSLR and have even more options for getting the shot I want, but as my friend Allyson Seconds said to encourage me, "It's about the eye not the camera". I have taken that advice to heart and work around and even exploit the deficiencies of my equipment. I am honored to have taken part in three art shows this past year and look forward to more in 2014. I may even have my first solo show in the works. I am also a singer and am currently putting together a new band. I also model for group member Kendall Tobe of Kendaru Photography for her Midikat Boutique.
Q. Something few people know about you is...
A. I wanted to be an actress when I was growing up. I could act out whole scenes from movies at 3.
Q. What is the craziest job you ever had?
A. I was a professional wrestling referee for seven and a half years. There is nothing quite as crazy as dodging flying bodies, blood and glass.
Q. If someone gave you $3000 today to spend on photography equipment, what would you purchase?
A. Probably a Canon Mark III. My little Powershot has definitely made me a Canon partisan.
Q. Mac or PC?
A. I had to make this choice a few years back and ultimately went with a PC. My Toshiba laptop has a wonderful display on it and I was fortunate enough to be gifted copies of Photoshop and Lightroom.
Q. Besides your camera, what is a must-have at each session?
A. An extra set of batteries, they are always dying!
Q. What is your favorite movie of all time?
A. The Empire Strikes Back
Q. What is your favorite TV series these days?
A. I will always love The Simpsons
Q. What inspires you on a regular basis?
A. The work of my fellow photographers who are friends, especially Allyson Seconds, Kendall Tobe and Jay Spooner, as well as the incredible almost overwhelming stream that is Tumblr. But my inspiration really is the day to day panorama and the little moments therein that keep you going. The glint of the sun off a building. The lines formed be a row of rooftops and power lines reaching into the sky. Two musicians taking a moment to throw an arm around each other. That is what inspires me and what I try to capture with my photography.
Q. If you could have lunch with someone famous, whom would that be?
A. That is a tough choice, but I think I have to say Hillary Clinton. Politics aside, her accomplishments are remarkable and an inspiration to women.
Q. Could you share 3 of your favorite images?
A. This first was in my most recent show and is called Light Breaking Through-From the Car. I took it while driving down I-5 last August.
The second is my favorite travel photo ever-  Totem Pole Mountain. It was shot in Weed, CA from the parking lot of the super market in June of 2012
The last is my favorite gig shot and features Skid Jones and Emile Dalkey from a Grub Dog and the Amazing Sweethearts show back in Sept 2011.

When I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, Daddy said she wants to be on stage. This little ball of personality is going to make a big mark in the world! Look out!

She was an absolute doll! Came ready to the photo session more prepared than professional models that I have worked with in the past. Her expressions and poses were practiced to a T.

I am very excited for our next adventure in June. More fun and smiles with this wonderfully awesome family!!

Book your family photo session by Oct. 15 and save $25!

45 Life Lessons, written by a 90 year old

45 Life Lessons, written by a 90 year old

1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short not to enjoy it.

4. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and family will.

5. Don’t buy stuff you don’t need.

6. You don’t have to win every argument. Stay true to yourself.

7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.

8. It’s OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for things that matter.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.

12. It’s OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye… But don’t worry; God never blinks.

16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful.  Clutter weighs you down in many ways.

18. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.

19. It’s never too late to be happy.  But it’s all up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don’t save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Overprepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words, ‘In five years, will this matter?’

27. Always choose Life.

28. Forgive but don’t forget.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give Time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.

35. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative — dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d
grab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. Accept what you already have, not what you think you need.

42. The best is yet to come…

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift.

Karen Vaisman, Another Win!

My name is Karen Vaisman; I am a photographic artist and professional retoucher. I love to set up creative shoots with very carefully selected models. I like to find women who are confident and whose alluring nature shows clearly in their eyes; models with an almost an electric connection with the lens. I love to find the beauty within anyone, particularly women and elicit captivating expressions. When a person looks at the lens, they often have very blank veiled look in their eyes. A quality needed by photographers is the ability to engage their model/subject in order to draw out their personality. I try to build trust in order to break through insecurities. During our shoot my goal is to help reveal a special part of the person, sometimes it is their own persona, and sometimes it is a character I want them to portray. My goal is for this magical quality to become apparent to the viewer in my imagery. (Samples here:

These two sample images are of two very talented models. Daphney Dameraux is an elegant model/actress who has been in the industry for years and has acted in commercials and television shows such as Star Trek. Heather Katelyn Grayson-Model is a model with natural beauty. She is very versatile and talented at skillfully changing her character– it is quite amazing how chameleonic she is, while maintaining a seductive allure all the while.

Model selection is key for me.  Identifying a quintessential quality (eye contact) in my models is very important before I ever pick up the camera. If I’m working with a non-model, I try to find a common bond to allow any fear or hesitation to subside so that I can capture their true appeal.  I often pre-visualize the entire image if I know the wardrobe in advance, preconceiving lighting effects in my mind. The final image is a careful combination of posing, composition, lighting, depth, negative space, background (real or illustrated in post production), dimensionality, wardrobe styling, makeup, hair, and of course eliciting an expression in every image.  The image is completed with expert retouching to perfect the elements captured during the shoot. The model/subject plus each talented team member (makeup artist, hair and wardrobe stylist) I work with helps influence the final image. I don’t often think about all of these qualities while I shoot, but rather try to move through the shoot organically. I’ve been shooting for 30 years and it has become innate and I often know the winning image when I click the shutter, before I even see it on the computer screen. I just feel it when all the elements come together.

I hope these before and after images give viewers a peek into how I like to transform a face into a beauty that transcends the two dimensional space it is framed in. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in a unique session capturing your inner beauty.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself.
Studio based out of Los Angeles / Agoura Hills California, I travel nationwide, concentrate on Northern and Southern California.  Currently  (2013) working in San Francisco, Sacramento and Vacaville, California.

I specialize in Fashion and People photography. I have worked with models, actors, designers – I photographed Fashion Week in Los Angeles. The focus is on accentuating the impact of my image  is 3-fold.

  1. Envisioning the image’s mood and style before picking up the camera.
  2. Sculpting with light and selecting depth of field – placing the subject in 3-dimensional space and creating the mood of that space through use of light, depth, styling, wardrobe and pose in relation to the negative space, setting and background around the subject.
  3. Understanding photoshop and concentrating on the fine art of detailed post production techniques, including controlled light and shadow.
2. List 3 photographers you admire – past and/or present.

Joe McNally

Jerry Ghionis

David Hobby

Cliff Mautner

Joel Grimes

3. If you weren’t a professional photographer, what would you like to be doing?

I can’t even imagine being anything else but a photographic artist - besides a mother, and I’m both! I am also a professional retouch artist. I spend as much time in photoshop retouching as I do behind the camera. I envision my desired result first, by understanding my post production and lighting tools – only then do I look through the lens as my blank palette before pressing the shutter.

4. What is your favorite genre to shoot, and why?
People, Animals, Fashion and Portraits.  I love expression. I love to elicit a feeling from the eyes of my subject – a direct connection with the lens, then I love to enhance it using a variety of post production techniques gained over 15 years.  I am very focused on light and how it falls on a 3 dimensional subject within the space provided. I’m very aware of negative space while I shoot which helps me position my subjects within that space.
5. Besides your camera, what is a must-have at each session?

Off Camera Flash with my pocket wizards TT5s (to enable me to control the settings from the camera).  I love to sculpt with light. I have so much more control, putting the light exactly where I want it with multiple speedlights – light, mobile, portable and easily placed where I need them.

6. What 3 words would your kids use to describe you?
Creative, Addicted to my camera, Can’t cook!

Kacies Ride for Hope 2012

About Kacies Ride

Please visit the website for more information.

I would like to invite you all to join us this year for “Kacie’s Ride For Hope”. The 7th Annual Kacie’s ride will be held on Sept 8th, 2012. It is getting bigger and better every year. Join us whether you ride or not! I personally thank each and every one of you that have assisted and participated in this event. It would not happen without you!!!

I have a personal connection to “Kacie’s Ride For Hope.” My little sister Kacie was shot to death in the driveway of her home by her ex-boyfriend on the 26th of July, 2006. She was only forty years old and left a fine young son. My sister Kacie liked to ride; one of her favorites was the “Hope Valley Run”.  In those days it was a three day party, but nowadays we put a little different twist on it. We are tired of what is happening to families due to domestic violence. There is no excuse to use violence to solve a dispute. It never works. Kacie was also a client and supporter of the “Center.” If she were here today you would see her face at the microphone running the show. I wish she was!

Our little putt through the High Sierra is getting pretty well known in Placerville and outlying areas. Each year our contribution towards “the Center” has grown considerably, ultimately assisting victims of domestic violence. Our goal is to provide much needed funds to the Center for Violence-free Relationships. We not only provide monetary support, we are opening the public’s eyes to the Domestic Violence that is happening all around us.

Nothing is going to bring my little sister back, but we can prevent other tragedies like this by supporting this cause. Come ride with us, and spread the word at home and in your county so that we can all work towards an end to Domestic Violence. Let’s make this a statewide and then a nationwide effort.

Thank you for your support,

Pat Barron

The Sound of the Present Sometimes I stop to look at the leaves blowing in the wind, or insects crawling, children playing and old sitting in the shade of the bowling club.
Walk during my lunch break is for me every day, a small essential journey.
Today, walking through the market there were so many smells, good and bad, but the fruit that I bought from an old farmer was good and juicy and his smile has opened my eyes and mouth in a smile even bigger.
And then thousands languages unknown to me and thousands noises, endless changing voices of the world.
I understand a bit of everything and the immense rest blows over me like breeze on sweaty skin.
In all this, when the pain disappears, i can hear a sound.
It ’s like the beating of a giant heart.
Do you hear that giant heart beating too?
It ‘a hidden sound like what you hear in the belly of a great ship.
A sound ever present.
I like to think that is the sound of the present.

Shoots for a Cure
Stimulate Photography is excited to announce a partnership with Shoots for a Cure (formerly known as Think Pink Photography). Think Pink Photography was founded in October 2007 to support individuals and their families who have been touched by breast cancer. We are a charitable organization that serves two main purposes – celebrating life and supporting the cause. Recently, we changed our name and our support. We now want to support ALL cancer patients, not just breast cancer.

Through our professional photographer network, we are helping cancer patients to celebrate life with charitable photography sessions. Individuals may choose to document their fight against the disease before or during treatment, or prefer to capture their victory by scheduling a session within 12 months after treatment is completed. Photographers world-wide are now available to donate time and talent to celebrate life and support the cause. There is no cost or obligation to the cancer patient. Clients participating in a Shoots for a Cure session will receive a complimentary photo session, as well as a set of 10 small prints from the session. They will also receive a discount on any additional portraits they wish to purchase, although there is absolutely no purchase required at any time.

To support the cause, we donate and fund raise for The American Cancer Society and the Susan G Komen Foundation. All funds generated through donations and various fundraising efforts are paid directly to The American Cancer Society, the Susan G Komen Foundation, in our name, or used 100% for marketing and awareness of our program.

Please subscribe to our blog (on the Shoots for a Cure website) and tell your friends and family about Shoots for a Cure.
Awareness is everything and we can’t be successful without you.

I encourage you to view our website, make a donation, or hire a photographer that supports Shoots for a Cure! If you hire me, mention Shoots for a Cure and I will make a personal donation to the organization. If you, or someone you know, would like to schedule a Shoots for a Cure session, please contact me for details.
I am very proud to be a network photographer with Shoots for a Cure, and am anxious to get the word out about this amazing program.

For more information, you can contact me, or you can visit the Shoots for a Cure website at

Birds of a Feather, Know About It Have you heard?
It's time you know about it!

In a time filled with the hum drum beat of the everyday, a new personal style is emerging. Introducing the “Birds of a Feather” collection by Lyric.

Lyric, a singer/songwriter from Sacramento, CA has released her line of jewelry for the everyday woman looking for that little edge to her daily wardrobe. Whether you are hitting the club or hitting up your favorite coffee place before the office, every woman wants a little uniqueness to her outfit, something to bring out your playful side despite the mundane day to day.

“I started out making my own feather earrings realizing that I LOVED the idea of every one of them being different, NOBODY sharing the same set, since they were all handmade by myself...that’s when I realized that I wanted to share this with others and join what I like to call, the land of creativity”

The thing that brings this collection together is the philosophy that while we all share similarities of beauty, there is an individual quality to each and every person out there, that special beat that nobody else follows yet when together makes a musical track to the soundtrack of our daily lives.

Birds of a Feather items can also be found at local boutiques in the Sacramento area.

Shop the store on Etsy!
